What is Microneedling?

If over-the-counter skin products aren't proving effective, but you don't want surgical procedures, learn more about minimally invasive treatments to rejuvenate the skin, like microneedling. At About Face & Body Medical Spa, our aesthetic team is happy to perform microneedling (collagen induction therapy). Microneedling uses multiple fine-gauge needles to effectively and safely create micro-injuries in the skin. The micro-injuries trigger the natural production of collagen and elastin, two nutrients that contribute to the overall health and appearance of your complexion. Often performed with other treatments, such as vitamin serums or platelet-rich plasma (PRP), microneedling can help minimize stretch marks, scars, and pores. Schedule a consultation at our Katy, TX practice to learn more about the benefits of microneedling and how to customize the procedure for your skin needs and goals.

How does microneedling work?

A microneedling treatment is performed in one of our office procedure rooms in around 30 – 60 minutes with numbing cream or a local anesthesia if requested, but patients generally report little or no pain and discomfort. The areas of skin being treated will be cleaned before the handpiece is evenly passed over. Once the microneedling is performed, a treatment, like platelet-rich plasma (PRP) or a vitamin-infused serum, can be applied so the nutrients can penetrate deeper into the skin. A moisturizer selected for your skin type will be massaged in along with UV protection since the treated skin will be sensitive following the procedure.

What to Expect After Microneedling?

After your treatment, you may have some redness and swelling for about one day, but this should gradually fade. It may take around 1 – 2 months as the elastin and collagen levels increase until you see significant improvements in the health and appearance of your skin. You should plan to get about 4 – 6 maintenance treatments performed every 4 – 6 weeks for ideal outcomes and lasting skin benefits.

Microneedling FAQ

How much does microneedling cost?
During your consultation, we will perform a skin analysis and then create your personalized plan. Once this is complete, we will be able to explain your treatment costs and what to expect during the procedure. About Face & Body Medical Spa frequently has discounts on skin treatment packages, so be sure to ask about our current deals during your appointment.

What exactly is microneedling?
Microneedling, also known as collagen induction therapy, is a nonsurgical treatment to improve the health of your skin. Collagen is a fibrous protein that helps keep your skin smooth, supple, and tight. Over time, your natural supply of collagen is reduced, and your skin becomes less elastic and thin. Microneedling causes small wounds in your skin. These micro-injuries force your skin to increase its collagen production and generate new skin cell growth. After a short recovery period, your complexion appears brighter, firmer, and healthier.

Can I combine other treatments with microneedling?
In the microneedling process, channels are created in your skin that help other treatments to penetrate the lower layers. This is why microneedling is often combined with other skin treatments, like special serums or PRP (platelet-rich plasma). Microneedling plus PRP has become known as a Vampire Facial®. In your initial consultation, we can discuss which treatments would enhance your microneedling and which would most benefit your skin.

How many treatments are recommended for optimal results?
Most patients need 3 – 6 microneedling treatments to achieve their best results. Although, how many sessions you require will vary based on the condition of your skin and your goals. Microneedling can be safely performed every 4 – 6 weeks as needed. During your consultation, we can estimate how many sessions you will need based on your skin and goals. When your skin goals are reached, we suggest scheduling maintenance sessions two times a year.

Is microneedling safe for everyone?
For the most part, microneedling is appropriate for all skin tones and types. Skin injuries created by microneedling are so minor there are usually no side effects after the treatment. Microneedling can be applied to most skin areas, including the face, neck, arms, thighs, chest, and lower legs. Microneedling is not recommended if you have taken Accutane within the last 2 – 3 months, plus if you have herpes simplex, an open wound, or an active skin infection. Additionally, you might not be able to get microneedling if you are pregnant, nursing, or undergoing radiation therapy.
